DIY Composting with 5 Gallon Buckets

Composting is a great way to reduce waste and create rich soil for your garden. But not everyone has the space for a large compost bin or the budget to buy one. Materials

All you need to get started is:

• Two 5 gallon buckets with lids
• A drill
• A 1/4 inch drill bit
• A bungee cord
• Newspaper or other browns (dry leaves, shredded paper, etc.)
• Food scraps and other greens (fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, etc.)

Step 1: Drill holes in one of the buckets

Take one of the buckets and drill several 1/4 inch holes all around the sides and bottom. These holes will allow air to circulate through the compost and help the materials break down more quickly.

Step 2: Add a layer of browns

Add a layer of newspaper or other browns to the bottom of the bucket to help absorb excess moisture and provide carbon for the compost. You can also use dry leaves, shredded paper, or other carbon-rich materials.

Step 3: Add food scraps and other greens

Add a layer of food scraps and other greens on top of the browns. This can include fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, and other kitchen scraps. Be sure to chop them up into smaller pieces so they break down more easily.

Step 4: Repeat layers

Continue adding layers of browns and greens until the bucket is full. Be sure to end with a layer of browns to help cover the greens and prevent odors.

Step 5: Cover and secure

Put the lid on the bucket and secure it with a bungee cord to keep animals out. You can also place the bucket on a stand or cinder blocks to allow air to circulate underneath.

Step 6: Wait and turn

Wait for the compost to break down, turning the bucket every few days to aerate the contents and speed up the process. Once the compost is dark and crumbly, it's ready to use in your garden!
